Which Duomo ticket should you buy?
Buy a combo that includes the terraces unless stairs and lifts are both out of the question. The terraces are what separates the Duomo from every other great church in Italy: no other Gothic cathedral lets the public walk its roof, and the recurring pattern in visitor reviews is that the nave impressed people less than they expected and the roof more. Choose the stairs version at €22 if about 250 steps are fine, the lift version at €26 if not, and remember that the lift goes up only, so the descent is on foot either way. Skip the terraces and pay €10 if you have already been up, or if the queue would eat a short day.
When to go, and how far ahead to book
Book the 09:00 slot or something after 16:00, on a weekday, and avoid 10:00 to 14:00, when the coach groups arrive and the lift queue runs to a quarter of an hour. Across the year, November, January and February are the quietest months and April, May, September and December the busiest, with December peaking because the Christmas market fills the square. A day ahead is enough for an ordinary weekday; give it a week for weekends, holidays and anything in the busy months, because the midday terrace slots go first.
